Gasoline Profit's 5-Month High Means U.S. Imports to Rise: Energy Markets

Gasoline shipments to the U.S. from Europe are poised to rebound in January after profit from the trade jumped to the highest level in almost five months.

The motor fuel was 14.5 cents a gallon more expensive in the U.S. than Europe on Dec. 31, the most since Aug. 5, based on futures for delivery to New York harbor and benchmark 95-octane grade in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp region. It was 1.44 cents cheaper on Dec. 14, the biggest discount since Oct. 21.

Alaska Report Calls For Improved Leak-Detection Technology On North Slope

ImageNearly every week on average since 1995, the North Slope oil fields have had a spill from a pipeline, a well, a tank or other equipment, according to a study by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation published last month in the Anchorage Daily News. That could be mitigated by close leak detection and pipeline regulation that might reduce the size and frequency of the spills, the study said.

New Solar Cell Self-Repairs Like Natural Plant Systems

ImageScienceDaily (Jan. 4, 2011) — Researchers are creating a new type of solar cell designed to self-repair like natural photosynthetic systems in plants by using carbon nanotubes and DNA, an approach aimed at increasing service life and reducing cost.

"We've created artificial photosystems using optical nanomaterials to harvest solar energy that is converted to electrical power,"said Jong Hyun Choi, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University.

Qantas looks to garbage to create biofuel for jets

The airline will team with US-based Solena Fuels to investigate whether waste that passengers leave on its jets can be converted into biofuel.

The airline and Solena plan a year-long feasibility study that could result in a $300 million commercial jet biofuel plant being built in Sydney.

The aim of the joint-venture will aim to convert commercial waste to biofuel using an already approved process that converts coal and gas into commercial-grade aviation fuel.

Iraq to Auction New Oil Licenses, Sign Akkas Gas Agreement, Ministry Says

Iraq, seeking fresh investment to help rebuild its energy industry, announced plans to auction additional licenses to explore for oil and gas, in what would be the fourth such offering since the ouster of Saddam Hussein.

An agreement to develop the Akkas gas field, delayed from the government’s last auction in October, would be signed this month, officials said today.

Møller - Mærsk A/S, Mærsk Olie og Gas A/S ("Maersk Oil"), has agreed with SK Energy Co., Ltd. to acquire SK do Brasil Ltda. for USD 2.4 billion on a cash and debt-free basis. The acquisition is subject to customary conditions, including governmental approval and will not affect the 2010 financial result of A. P. Møller – Mærsk A/S.
